The Roxburghe Estates is carrying out a major moorland conservation programme on the upland farming unit at Byrecleugh and Rawburn near Longformacus covering an area of 4,500ha. to enhance the level of bio-diversity.
Some, like the installation of a biomass boiler and windfarm, are to improve the longevity of the estate and surrounding environment. The conservation activities of the farmers and gamekeepers look to protect native species such as the red squirrel and black grouse.
The Estate is also a vital player in the local community – a fact that is quite often forgotten. It directly employees 170 staff, provides 250 affordable houses and makes available land and buildings for community uses and activities.
Roxburghe Estates family heritage and its long term investment in the management of the Estate aims to safeguard its future for generations to come.
