We are seeking to expand our in-house trades team by recruiting an enthusiastic mason.

The Role

The Mason will be part of the Works Department and report to the Clerk of Works.

Working alongside our Master Mason, this is an excellent opportunity for a recently qualified, time served stone mason, or builder with a keen interest in traditional construction, to join the prestigious and historic Roxburghe Estate.

About us

The estate has been part of the Scottish Borders since 1358. Everything we do, is to ensure that we continue into the next millennium. Through our longevity we have developed deep connections with the land and its people and we are guided by the principle that our operations benefit the health of the environment and the prosperity of local communities. We are not just enduring; we will constantly innovate and grow to maximise the potential of the region and land under our care so we will be a source of inspiration and a model estate for the 21st Century.

Passionate People

It takes a certain sort of person to flourish in such a fast-paced, multi-dimensional environment like Floors Castle.  We look for talented, self-motivated and enthusiastic individuals who will be able to share our passion for providing a warm welcome and amazing experiences.

Our Values

Custodians, Community, Authenticity, Drive & Warmth

To understand, improve and develop our natural, heritage and built environments, allowing them to flourish as sustainable businesses capable of making significant contributions to a vibrant Borders community, now and for generations to come.

Purpose of the Role

  • We are seeking to expand our inhouse trades team by recruiting an enthusiastic mason.
  • You will undertake repairs and maintenance across our entire built environment to keep our buildings safe and in a good state of repair.
  • Working with the Master Mason, you’ll help us keep up to date with repairs on prestigious structures such as Floors Castle.
  • You will help us bring less used parts of the Estate back to life and increase the amount and size of repairs undertaken in-house.
  • You will be able to further develop and improve your skills in all forms of stone masonry

What’s involved

As a site-based operative, you will be adaptable and will work in a variety of situations across the Estate. You will work across our entire built environment which includes our heritage assets such as Floors Castle, our grounds, farms and private rented properties.

Given the nature of the Estate, the work is without doubt varied; you may find yourself using all of your skills and training to carve out a detailed stone replacement one day to perhaps the more typical rebuilding or pointing a policy wall or chimney the next. It’s not all about the prestige though! Working with a labourer, or on your own, you will also be expected to carry out some jobbing type builder repairs throughout the wider Estate.

Sometimes it’s just a bit random! Over and above everything else, and despite their exceptional craft skills, the Works Team are an adaptable team who respond to the challenge at hand. The Mason must have a similar approach and be willing to muck in and lend a hand when needed.

Hours of work

Flexibility is important, but a base working week would be 39 hours comprising
Mon to Thursday 08:00-16:30 and Friday 08:00-15.30.

Qualities you will posses

  • Passion and enthusiasm for your work.
  • Adaptable.
  • Diligence and determination.
  • Positive can-do attitude and ability to follow instruction.
  • Well organised and capable of using initiative.
  • Proactive and able to work under pressure.
