Retail Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be a part of the seasonal Visitor Support team at Floors Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic country houses.


  • To effectively contribute to the retail operations on a daily basis, in a ‘hands-on’ capacity ensuring excellent visitor care and product presentation.
  • To maximise income and profitability, working within the guidelines, policies and procedures set by Floors Castle and Gardens.
  • To provide a high standard of customer service at all times, helping to achieve the best possible Visitor Experience.
  • To maintain a welcoming, clean and friendly environment to maximise sales and drive footfall.

The post involves regular weekend and Bank Holiday working with some attendance at meetings and training days as required.

Situations may arise that require the post holder to carry out other duties, commensurate with their level of responsibility, that involve working in other areas within the enterprises team.

  1. Customer Care

Provide exceptional standards of customer care, so that the reputation of Floors Castle is enhanced and sales targets achieved.

  • High quality service and enthusiasm for the job, the products and the property.
  • Ensure all visitors are greeted warmly and promptly.
  • Respond swiftly and appropriately to any customer comments or queries.
  1. Shop Presentation and Merchandising

Ensure the shop areas are presented to an exceptional standard so that customers have ease of access to products and are comfortable in the environment.

  • Ensure all areas are clean and tidy and appropriate levels of stock are always available.
  • Ensure all products are well displayed and accessible to customers and appropriate complimentary goods are suggested in the right places.
  • To acquire excellent product knowledge and offer customers advice to meet their needs.
  • Ensure all products are always suitably described, with the correct prices.
  • Display appropriate point of sale and merchandising.
  1. Financial Management
  • Check all transactions: cash, cheque and credit card.
  • Follow cash handling, cashing up and reconciliation procedures accurately
  • Always ensure the security of cash and stocks is not compromised.
  1. Health & Safety

All staff are expected to observe all health and safety at work regulations as set out by the Floors Castle in accordance with its statutory obligations.

  • Appropriately report accidents if they should happen, to the Duty Manager and the Retail Supervisor.
  • Always ensure the safe use of machinery and equipment to minimise any risk of injury.
  • Become trained in safe use of fire extinguishers and food hygiene (if applicable) and health and safety procedures.
  • Always promote good housekeeping practices leading by example at all times.

5. Any Other Duties

  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Retail Supervisor.
  • Attend training courses as required.
  • Fill in in other areas of the business where appropriate..
  • In addition, all employees are expected to work within the terms of their contract of employment and adhere to Floors Castle’s policies and the Values and Behaviours.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Must have knowledge of retail sales techniques
  • Must be capable of conversing with a wide variety of people and personalities
  • Must be interested in learning about the property and the surrounding area


  • Good communication skills required
  • Essential to have demonstrable influencing and selling skills
  • Must be an approachable and customer focused personality
  • Must represent ability to use own initiative
  • Must work well to targets
  • Must work well under pressure
  • Must work well as a part of a team


Experience in similar operation would be of benefit

Cash handling experience is essential

Must have experience of working with the general public

Proven ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines
