Health from the Ground Up Workshop

A workshop exploring the links between our own health and the health of our soils. This session will be held in the beautiful Floors Castle Walled Garden, and will include some practical fermentation.

In this workshop, led food specialist by Charlotte Maberly, we will look closely at how to sustain health in the soil as well as our own gut. We’ll start outdoors in the beautiful Floors Walled Garden, then will be heading inside to learn about the fascinating cultural history of fermented foods and trying out some fermentation techniques ourselves.

Some call it dirt, but the life underneath our feet is far more complex than it might seem, with one teaspoon of healthy soil containing as many organisms as there are people on the planet.

Recent research has shown that understanding this ‘soil biome’ can also reveal much about the workings of our own immune system, and that, as Lady Eve Balfour supposed, ‘The food we eat is only as good as the soil from which it springs.’

Charlotte Maberly is a gastronomist and co-founder of the UK’s first MSc in Gastronomy. Via her company, Food Connects, she creates food-inspired experiences that explore the connections between people, place and nature. She works across the UK & Europe with individuals, schools, businesses and destinations and is thrilled to be collaborating with the Floors Gardens team to produce this series of workshops.
