A Guide to Pruning
This class will be a combination of theory and practical demonstrations. Simon will demonstrate how climbing plants and wall shrubs such as Wisteria, Clematis and Hydrangea petiolaris are cared for and will demonstrate how the rambling and climbing Roses here at Floors are pruned and maintained to achieve the swag effect on chains. We will also show you how we care for our Peaches, Vines and espaliered Plum Trees as well as the different pruning and training techniques utilised for our Apple Trees in the Millennium Parterre.

Join us for an engaging and informative pruning workshop led by our Head Gardener, Simon McManus. With over 20 years of professional gardening experience, Simon has encountered nearly every pruning dilemma faced by gardeners and will share practical advice and expert techniques during this interactive session.
This class will be a combination of theory and practical demonstrations, giving you both a clear understanding of pruning principles and the confidence to apply them at home. Simon will demonstrate how climbing plants and wall shrubs such as Wisteria, Clematis and Hydrangea petiolaris are properly maintained, along with the techniques used to prune and train the rambling and climbing roses at Floors Castle to achieve the distinctive swag effect on chains.
You will also learn how we care for:

Espaliered plum trees

The apple trees in the Millennium Parterre, including the different pruning and training techniques used to maintain them
The session will also include guidance on the maintenance of herbaceous borders, helping you prepare your garden for the seasons ahead. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions throughout, making this a valuable chance to gain tailored advice from one of the Borders’ most experienced gardeners.
Time permitting, the workshop will conclude with a short tour of the garden and glasshouses.
Guests are welcome to take notes and photographs, and we encourage you to come prepared with any questions you may have.
