Department: Roxburghe Estates Hill Farming Enterprise

Reporting to: Farm Foreman

Hours: Monday to Friday with alternate weekends off, with holiday cover as required. Longer hours and 7 day a week throughout busy times as required.

 

The Role

Working alongside the Farm Foreman, the stockperson / shepherd would be based on Rawburn Farm, located 8 miles outside of Duns, in the Scottish Borders. The Farm covers 2,500 acres of both in-bye and hill ground, running around 1,600 ewes and a herd of 70 suckler cows.

 

Responsibilities and duties

Day to Day Responsibility of the Suckler Herd

The suckler herd consists of 70 Luing suckler cows, calving outdoors from mid-April. The cows are crossed with either a Luing bull or a Simmental bull to produce store cattle and sale heifers. Changes to the farming system are planned for this coming year which provides an exciting time to join the farm.

Tractor Work Associated with Running a Stock Farm

This would include, but is not limited to, feeding, bedding, mucking out and carting silage/straw etc.

All Aspects of Sheep Work

Currently, we are running around 1,150 in-bye cheviots, mules and blackie ewes lambing indoors late March and throughout April, with around 450 hill cheviots lambing outdoors from mid-April and May, producing fat lambs, store lambs and sale/replacement ewe lambs. Duties surrounding their care would involve, but is not limited to, lambing, dosing, jagging, gathering etc.

General Farm Duties and Basic Machinery Maintenance
